Students of the Red Cedar Environmental Institute in Chetek shone at the state Destination Imagination competition April 14. Destination Imagination involves students in challenges which require teamwork, creativity and problem solving, among other 21st century skills. The Red Cedar Environmental Institute students competed in an engineering challenge where they had to build a structure that could support more weight and hold more golf balls than their competitors, while at the same time present a creative story about the structure. The students spent hundreds of hours preparing for the competition, which involved elaborate costumes and props. The team placed third in the state competition, and is now heading to the global finals competition in Tennessee. The team also received special recognition for one of their costumes, winning the prestigious Renaissance Award for their artwork and design. Although the team is proud of their accomplishments, they are looking forward to competing at the next level and have already begun working on improvements. Those wishing to make a donation to help offset travel expenses for the students can contact the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Area School District office.
